Do Greater x Gökotta: Youth Mural Design Competition

Do Greater Charlotte is thrilled to launch a youth design competition in partnership with Gökotta! This is an incredible opportunity for young creatives to showcase their digital design skills and leave a lasting mark on Uptown Charlotte. The winning design will receive a $500 prize! 

Mural Design Challenge: Students will create a vibrant digital mural for the Trella Uptown podcast studio.

The Challenge:
Students will create a vibrant digital mural for the Trella Uptown podcast studio wall that flows around the central TV. This first-floor wall will also be visible from the adjacent common area spaces in the heart of the property. 

Designs may be done in any digital format (Procreate, Photoshop, InDesign), However, all designs must meet the technical requirements below in order to be printed on vinyl and installed. The art should energize the space, spark creativity, and reflect the conversations and connections that happen here.

Who Can Enter:

    • Youth ages 13-19, currently in middle or high school 
    • Youth must have previously participated in a Do Greater program or workshop, or participate in one of the designated pre-sessions.
    • It’s highly recommended that youth attend at least one pre-session to enter a design in the competition.

    Design Requirements:

      • Medium: Digital design at 300 dpi for image files or vector. Files should be set up at half scale to ensure that they can be printed at a high enough resolution at full scale.
      • Theme: No required theme. However, consideration of the project aesthetic and end user is suggested. Photos shown are renderings of the finished spaces. Property logo should NOT be used in the design. Brand colors are shown for reference and are not necessary to be used as the color palette for the art. 
      • Dimensions / specifications: See design template.

    Submission Details:

      • Deadline: Friday, Oct. 17 @ 6 PM
      • How to submit: Fill out the Design Submission Google Form and supply a link for judges to download your design. Note: Files are typically too large to email. 
      • Pre-sessions: A couple of optional pre-sessions will be offered to help participants develop/refine their designs and ask the client questions. Click the link to register for the first pre-session: Procreate: Digital Creator Workshop. Stay tuned for more announcements. 

    Judging Criteria: 

      • Creativity & Originality: How unique and imaginative is the concept? Does the design stand out and bring a fresh perspective to the space?
      • Relevance to the Space: Does the mural reflect the podcast studio environment? Does it inspire creativity, conversation, and connection? What story does it tell?
      • Integration with the Wall: How well does the design work around the central TV? Does it make good use of the wall’s size and layout?
      • Visual Impact & Energy: Does the mural energize the space? Is it visually engaging and impactful from all viewing angles and from outside the room?
      • Clarity & Execution: Is the design clear and easy to understand? Could it realistically be printed and viewed as a mural with the given wall dimensions?
